In the early 1990s, my Asian American ministry colleagues and I began to identify the need for more published material that was contextualized for Asian American audiences. One key area was in the area of discipleship and Bible Study, and we longed to see a book of this kind. In 1995, InterVarsity Press (IVP) approached me with the same idea, and my journey toward writing what eventually would be Losing Face, Finding Grace began. In December 1996, the book was published and debuted at Urbana ’96 where it sold several thousand copies. After selling over 12,000 copies, Losing Face, Finding Grace is now in its 5th printing. It has also been well received outside the U.S., including Canada, Europe and Hong Kong.  A Mandarin Chinese translation of the book was also published in 2008, with Christian bookstore outlets in East Asia carrying the Mandarin version.
